Root Canal Treatment in Birmingham & Manchester
When a tooth becomes decayed or damaged, it can usually be repaired with a simple filling. However, if the decay or damage affects the root of the tooth causing an abscess to develop, more extensive treatment may be necessary. Our experienced dentists can carry out root canal treatment at our Birmingham and Manchester practices if this is necessary to save your tooth. Root canal treatment is far less expensive than removing a tooth and replacing it with a crown or implant.
Root Canal Treatment Procedure
If the pulp of your tooth (the nerve and blood supply) is damaged or decayed, any infection will need to be removed in order for your tooth to be saved and to prevent the spread of the infection. This will enable your tooth to be saved, but it is a time-consuming procedure that requires a skilful dentist. Fortunately, our professional, specialist dentists are able to provide the best possible root canal treatment in Manchester and Birmingham, so you can be sure that your teeth will be well cared for.
If your dentist decides that root canal treatment is necessary, they will use local anaesthetic to ensure that the area is completely numb so that you do not feel any pain. At every stage, your Smile Stylist dentist will ensure that you remain comfortable and relaxed, and will talk to you about each step so that you understand what is happening, thereby alleviating any anxiety you may feel.
Once the area is numb, a drill will be used to clean out the root canal, to remove any and all infection. If an abscess is present, it will need to be drained. Once the root canal has been cleaned, a temporary filling will be applied to allow your tooth to settle and begin to heal. You will then need to attend for a second root canal treatment appointment at our Birmingham or Manchester practice a week or two later, to check that the infection has been successfully treated – at that point, the temporary filling will be removed and a permanent filling installed.
Your tooth will look much the same as it did before your treatment, thanks to the modern methods and materials that we use for all of our root canal treatments in our Manchester and Birmingham clinics. Depending on the size, location and overall health of your tooth, your dentist may advise that a crown is fitted over the top of your tooth if it would otherwise appear darker than its neighbours. This might also be recommended to strengthen or support your tooth.
After your root canal treatment has been successfully completed, you can care for it in just the same way as your other teeth. Your dentist may offer some advice on daily brushing and flossing as well as dietary choices in order to minimise the risk of future infections or decay, and you should ensure that you visit your Smile Stylist dentist in Manchester or Birmingham at least every six months for routine checkups to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.
