Am I Suitable for Invisalign?

If you've been thinking about straightening your teeth, there's a good chance Invisalign is on your radar. Clear, removable and far more discreet than traditional braces, it's become one of the most popular ways for adults across Manchester and Hale Barns to improve their smile without anyone needing to know they are even having treatment. As Manchester’s Diamond Invisalign Provider, we've now completed more than 10,000 Invisalign cases.
But the question we hear most often at Smile Stylist is a simple one: am I actually suitable for Invisalign? The honest answer is that most people are, though not everyone, and the only way to know for certain is a proper clinical assessment. This guide explains what Invisalign can treat, who tends to make an ideal candidate, and the situations where an alternative might serve you better.
What Can Invisalign Treat?
Invisalign has come a long way since it first launched. Modern aligners, combined with attachments and refinements, can now correct a much wider range of orthodontic problems than many people realise, including:
Crowded teeth: where there's not enough room in the jaw, causing teeth to overlap or twist. Mild to moderate crowding responds particularly well to clear aligners.
Gaps between teeth: small to moderate spaces can usually be closed predictably, whether it’s a single gap between the front teeth or spacing across the whole arch.
Overbite: where the upper front teeth sit too far over the lower teeth. Invisalign can often reduce a deep overbite, particularly in mild to moderate cases.
Underbite: where the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth. Milder underbites can be treated with aligners; more severe cases may need combined treatment.
Crossbite and open bite: many bite discrepancies can now be improved with aligners, sometimes alongside small tooth-coloured attachments that give the aligners extra grip.
In short, if your concern is crooked, crowded, gappy or mildly misaligned teeth, Invisalign is very likely to be an option worth exploring.

Who Makes a Good Invisalign Candidate?
Suitability is not just about your teeth. It’s also about your gum health, your age and, honestly, your habits. As a general rule, you're likely to be a strong candidate if the following apply:
You have healthy teeth and gums
Orthodontic treatment moves teeth through the supporting bone, so your mouth needs to be in good health first. Active gum disease or untreated decay would need to be resolved before aligners can begin. This is not a permanent barrier; it simply means a little groundwork before treatment starts.
Your case is mild to moderate
The majority of cosmetic concerns, such as crowding, spacing and rotated front teeth, fall comfortably within Invisalign’s capabilities. Severely rotated teeth, very large gaps or significant jaw discrepancies may be better suited to fixed braces or combined orthodontic care, and we will always tell you honestly if that is the case.
You can commit to wearing your aligners
This is the big one. Invisalign only works while it is in your mouth, and that means wearing your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush. If you know yourself well enough to say you would forget to put them back in, a fixed option might actually get you a better result.
Your adult teeth have come through
People often ask about an age limit for Invisalign. There's no upper age limit at all; we treat patients in their 50s, 60s and beyond. For younger patients, treatment generally starts once most adult teeth are present, and Invisalign Teen is designed specifically for teenagers.
Can You Get Invisalign with Crowns, Missing Teeth or Implants?
These are some of the most common questions we are asked, and the answers are more reassuring than most people expect.
Crowns and veneers: yes, in most cases. Aligners fit over crowned teeth just as they do natural ones. The main consideration is where attachments are placed, which your dentist will plan around your existing restorations.
Missing teeth: yes, often. In fact, Invisalign can be used to move teeth into a better position before a gap is restored with an implant or bridge, improving the final result.
Implants: existing implants cannot be moved, as they are fixed in the bone. That does not rule out Invisalign; treatment is simply planned around the implant while the natural teeth are aligned.
When Might Invisalign Not Be the Right Choice?
We believe in honest advice, so it’s worth saying plainly: Invisalign is not the answer for everyone. You may be better suited to an alternative if:
You have a severe bite problem or jaw discrepancy that needs fixed braces, or, in rare cases, combined orthodontic and surgical care.
You have active, unmanaged gum disease, which would need treating first.
You are unlikely to wear the aligners consistently. Compliance is the single biggest factor in whether treatment succeeds.
Even if Invisalign is not right for you, that does not mean a straighter smile is off the table. There's almost always a route to the result you want; it may just look slightly different from the one you first had in mind.
How Do I Find Out for Sure?
Online quizzes and guides like this one can only take you so far. Genuine suitability comes down to a clinical assessment of your teeth, gums and bite. At Smile Stylist, that starts with a consultation and a 3D scan using our iTero digital scanner, showing you a simulation of how your smile could look after treatment, before you commit to anything.
It’s quick, comfortable and completely pressure-free, and it will give you a clear, honest answer to the question you came here with.
